This code signifies the presence of a non-invasive malignant tumor (carcinoma in situ) within urinary organs other than the bladder, or when the specific urinary organ is not documented. It represents abnormal cell growth that has not spread beyond the original layer of tissue.

Apply this code when pathology reports confirm carcinoma in situ of the ureter, urethra, renal pelvis, or other specified urinary organ (excluding bladder), or when the documentation simply states "carcinoma in situ of urinary organ, NOS." This diagnosis is typically made following biopsy or surgical excision.

• Ensure documentation explicitly states "carcinoma in situ" and specifies a urinary organ other than the bladder, or "unspecified urinary organ."
• Do not use this code for carcinoma in situ of the bladder (refer to 233.7).
• If the malignancy is invasive, a code from the malignant neoplasm series (189.x) would be more appropriate.
