It signifies the biological state of pregnancy in a surrogate mother who is carrying a fetus conceived via assisted reproductive technology (ART) using the gametes of others.

Use this code for a gestational carrier during any encounter related to her pregnancy, such as routine prenatal care, management of pregnancy complications, or labor and delivery. It should be assigned as a primary or secondary diagnosis to document the patient's pregnant status in the context of her role as a surrogate.

• Do not use this code for the intended parent(s) or for a traditional surrogate (where the surrogate is also the biological mother).
• Remember the Excludes1 note: Z31.7 is for the management and counseling related to becoming a gestational carrier, not for the pregnancy itself.
