This code indicates that a patient is pregnant, but the pregnancy itself is not the primary reason for the encounter or the focus of treatment. It signifies a normal, uncomplicated pregnancy discovered or noted during a visit for an unrelated condition.

Use this code when a pregnant patient presents for care of a condition completely separate from her pregnancy, such as a sprained ankle, a routine physical, or a dermatological issue. It should be assigned when the pregnancy has no bearing on the management or outcome of the primary diagnosis.

• Always sequence this code as a secondary diagnosis, never as the primary.
• Do not use this code if there are any pregnancy-related complications; instead, refer to the O00-O9A series.
• Distinguish from Z33.3 (pregnant state, gestational carrier), which applies to surrogacy.
