This code describes an incident where an individual experiences a loss of balance, such as a slip, trip, or stumble, but manages to regain their footing without actually falling to the ground. It indicates a near-fall event that did not result in a complete loss of vertical posture.

Use this code when a patient presents for evaluation after a near-fall incident where they did not sustain an actual fall. This is appropriate for situations where the patient reports slipping on a wet surface, tripping over an object, or stumbling due to uneven ground, but successfully prevented themselves from falling.

• This code is specifically for incidents without a fall; if a fall occurred, a different W18 code is necessary.
• The "initial encounter" extension (A) is used for the first time the patient is receiving active treatment for the injury or condition.
• Always code any resulting injuries in addition to this external cause code.
