Ankyloglossia

Ankyloglossia, commonly known as "tongue-tie," is a congenital anomaly characterized by an abnormally short, thick lingual frenulum that restricts the tongue's range of motion. This restriction can impair breastfeeding, speech articulation, and oral hygiene.

Use this code when documentation explicitly states a diagnosis of ankyloglossia or tongue-tie. This diagnosis is typically made during a physical examination, often in infants presenting with feeding difficulties or in older children with speech impediments attributed to restricted tongue movement.

• Ensure the documentation specifies "ankyloglossia" or "tongue-tie" and not just a short frenulum without functional impairment.
• Do not confuse with other oral anomalies affecting the palate or lips.
• Consider co-occurring conditions such as feeding difficulties (e.g., R63.3) or speech articulation disorders (e.g., R47.01) if documented.
