Retrograde ejaculation

This code describes the condition where semen, during ejaculation, enters the bladder instead of exiting through the urethra. This occurs due to a malfunction of the internal urethral sphincter, which normally closes during ejaculation. It is a form of male infertility or subfertility.

Use this code when documentation explicitly states a diagnosis of retrograde ejaculation. This diagnosis is often made after a post-ejaculatory urinalysis reveals the presence of sperm. It is commonly associated with conditions like diabetes, certain surgical procedures (e.g., prostatectomy), or medications.

• Ensure documentation clearly distinguishes between retrograde ejaculation and anejaculation or aspermia.
• Consider co-morbid conditions such as diabetes mellitus (E08-E13 with .69) or neurological disorders that may contribute to the condition.
• Review operative reports for procedures that might lead to this complication, such as transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).
