Visual distortions of shape and size

This code describes metamorphopsia, a visual disturbance where objects appear distorted in shape or size. Patients may perceive straight lines as wavy, or objects as larger (macropsia) or smaller (micropsia) than they actually are. This can affect one or both eyes and significantly impact daily activities.

Use this code when documentation explicitly states visual distortions of shape and/or size, such as metamorphopsia, macropsia, or micropsia. This is often associated with retinal conditions like macular degeneration, epiretinal membrane, or central serous retinopathy. The physician's notes should clearly describe the patient's subjective experience of distorted vision.

• Do not use this code for general blurred vision or reduced visual acuity without specific mention of shape/size distortion.
• Always code the underlying ocular condition causing the metamorphopsia first, if known.
• Distinguish from visual field defects (e.g., H53.4x) which involve missing parts of the visual field, rather than distorted perception of existing objects.
