Alternating exotropia

This code describes a type of strabismus where one eye deviates outward (exotropia), and the deviation alternates between the left and right eyes. This means that at different times, either the left eye or the right eye will turn out, while the other eye fixates. It indicates a lack of consistent binocular alignment.

Use this code when documentation explicitly states "alternating exotropia" or describes an exotropic deviation that is observed to switch between the left and right eyes. This code is appropriate for both intermittent and constant alternating exotropia. Clinical notes should clearly indicate the alternating nature of the exotropia.

• Differentiate from monocular exotropia (e.g., H50.11- or H50.12-) where the deviation is consistently in one eye.
• Do not confuse with alternating esotropia (H50.05), which involves an inward deviation.
• Consider laterality if the documentation specifies a predominant eye, though "alternating" implies both.
