This code represents a fluency disorder, such as stuttering or cluttering, that manifests for the first time in adulthood. Use this code when documentation clearly indicates that a patient developed a fluency disorder after childhood, typically in adolescence or adulthood. Supporting documentation should specify the adult onset and describe the characteristics of the speech disfluency.

• Carefully review the patient's history to confirm the adult onset of the fluency disorder, distinguishing it from childhood onset (F80.81).
• Ensure the documentation rules out other causes of fluency disturbance, such as neurological conditions or tic disorders, as these would lead to different codes.
• Do not use this code if the fluency disorder is secondary to a cerebrovascular event (I69.-23) or is better classified as dysphasia (R47.02).
