Documentation should clearly describe the stereotyped nature of the movements, their impact, and rule out other causes.

• Carefully review documentation to differentiate stereotyped movement disorders from tic disorders (F95.-) and abnormal involuntary movements (R25.-).
• Ensure that the movements are not secondary to an organic neurological condition (G20-G25) or part of a more pervasive psychiatric disorder (e.g., autism spectrum disorder).
• Consult the "Excludes2" notes to avoid miscoding related behaviors like trichotillomania (F63.3) or nail-biting (F98.8) when they are the primary concern.
