This code represents a localized infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissues caused by mycobacteria, excluding tuberculosis and leprosy. It encompasses various non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections that manifest cutaneously, often presenting as nodules, ulcers, or abscesses.

Use this code for documented cases of skin infections confirmed to be caused by atypical mycobacteria, such as Mycobacterium marinum (fish tank granuloma), Mycobacterium fortuitum, or Mycobacterium chelonae. Documentation should clearly identify the mycobacterial etiology and its cutaneous manifestation.

• Do not use this code for tuberculosis of the skin (A18.4) or leprosy (A30.-).
• Specify the type of mycobacterium if known and documented, as some NTMs have specific codes (e.g., B60.8 for other specified protozoal diseases, which might be confused with some NTMs if not carefully reviewed).
• Ensure the documentation differentiates between cutaneous mycobacterial infection and other bacterial skin infections.
