Foreign body in ear

This code signifies the presence of an object, not naturally occurring, lodged within the external auditory canal or middle ear. This can include items such as insects, beads, cotton, or small toys. The foreign body may or may not be causing symptoms like pain, hearing loss, or infection.

Use this code when documentation clearly indicates a foreign body is present in the ear. This applies to both symptomatic and asymptomatic presentations, and whether the foreign body was self-inserted, accidentally entered, or is of unknown origin. Supporting documentation includes physician notes detailing the foreign body's presence, location, and any associated symptoms or findings.

• Do not use this code if the foreign body has already been successfully removed; instead, code for the reason for the encounter (e.g., ear pain, hearing loss).
• Be sure to also code for any associated complications, such as otitis externa (380.1x) or tympanic membrane perforation (384.2x), if documented.
• Distinguish from impacted cerumen (380.4), which is a natural ear secretion and not considered a foreign body.
