Phantom limb (syndrome)

This code describes the sensation of a limb or organ that is no longer physically present. Patients typically experience pain, itching, or pressure in the absent body part, often following amputation. It is a neurological phenomenon, not a psychological disorder.

Apply this code when documentation clearly indicates a patient is experiencing phantom limb sensations, particularly pain, after an amputation. It is appropriate for both acute and chronic presentations of this syndrome. Supporting documentation should specify the phantom sensation and its association with a missing limb.

• Always code the underlying cause of the amputation (e.g., trauma, peripheral vascular disease) as the primary diagnosis, if applicable and still relevant to the current encounter.
• Do not confuse phantom limb syndrome with stump pain, which is pain originating from the residual limb itself.
• Consider additional codes for specific types of pain (e.g., chronic pain, neuropathic pain) if documented and supported.
