Dysthymic disorder

This code represents a chronic, low-grade depressive disorder characterized by a persistent depressed mood for at least two years in adults, or one year in children and adolescents. Individuals experience symptoms such as low energy, poor appetite or overeating, insomnia or hypersomnia, low self-esteem, poor concentration, and feelings of hopelessness. The symptoms are less severe than major depression but are long-lasting and can significantly impact daily functioning.

Use this code when documentation indicates a persistent depressive disorder that does not meet the full criteria for a major depressive episode. This diagnosis is appropriate for patients exhibiting chronic, milder depressive symptoms over an extended period. Supporting documentation should clearly outline the duration and nature of the symptoms.

• Differentiate from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) based on symptom severity and duration; dysthymia is chronic and less severe.
• Do not code concurrently with Major Depressive Disorder, current episode, unless specified as "with intermittent major depressive episodes."
• Ensure the medical record supports the chronic nature of the condition, typically requiring a duration of at least two years for adults.
