Subacute delirium

This code represents a form of delirium characterized by a fluctuating disturbance in attention, awareness, and cognition that develops over a period of days to weeks. It is less acute in onset and resolution than acute delirium, but still represents an acute change from baseline mental status.

Use this code for patients exhibiting symptoms of delirium that have persisted for more than a few days but less than several months, and are not chronic. Documentation should clearly indicate an acute or subacute onset of cognitive impairment, disorientation, or altered consciousness, often in the context of an underlying medical condition.

• Differentiate from acute delirium (293.0) based on the duration and progression of symptoms.
• Always code the underlying medical condition causing the delirium first, if known.
• Avoid using this code for chronic cognitive disorders like dementia, even if there are acute exacerbations.
