Chickenpox with other specified complications

This code represents a diagnosis of varicella (chickenpox) where the patient has developed additional, specified complications beyond the typical rash and fever. These complications are not severe enough to be classified as visceral, neurological, or other highly specific categories, but are clearly documented as directly resulting from the varicella infection.

Use this code when the medical record explicitly states chickenpox with a documented complication such as secondary bacterial skin infection (e.g., impetigo, cellulitis) not otherwise specified, dehydration due to poor oral intake from painful lesions, or mild respiratory symptoms directly attributed to the varicella. Documentation should clearly link the complication to the varicella infection.

• Ensure the complication is clearly specified and documented as a direct result of the varicella.
• Do not use this code for uncomplicated chickenpox; refer to 052.9 for those cases.
• If a more specific complication is documented (e.g., pneumonia, encephalitis), use the appropriate, more specific varicella complication code.
