Tobacco use

This code indicates the current, active use of tobacco products by a patient. It signifies that the patient is presently consuming tobacco, but it does not specify the type of tobacco product or the frequency of use. This code is for documenting the presence of tobacco use without implying dependence or a history of dependence.

Apply this code when a patient reports current tobacco consumption, but there is no documentation of nicotine dependence or a history of tobacco dependence. It is appropriate for routine screenings where tobacco use is identified, or when tobacco use is a contributing factor to a patient's current health condition. This code is also used when a patient is a casual user or has not yet developed dependence.

• Do not use this code if the patient has a documented history of tobacco dependence; refer to Z87.891.
• Avoid this code if the patient is diagnosed with nicotine dependence or tobacco dependence; use the appropriate F17.2- code.
• Ensure documentation clearly states current tobacco use without indicating dependence to support this code.
