Non-parental relative-child conflict

This code signifies significant interpersonal difficulties or disagreements between a child or adolescent and a non-parental relative. This conflict is severe enough to cause distress or functional impairment for the child, the relative, or both, and is not attributable to a mental health disorder.

Apply this code when documentation indicates ongoing tension, arguments, or strained relationships between a child and a grandparent, aunt, uncle, cousin, or other relative who is not a parent. This is appropriate when the conflict is a primary focus of clinical attention or contributes to the child's presenting problems.

• Ensure the documentation clearly specifies the relative involved is not a parent.
• Do not use this code if the conflict is with group home staff; refer to the Excludes1 note.
• Consider co-reporting with codes for any associated behavioral or emotional disturbances in the child.
