This code indicates that an individual has had close contact with a person confirmed or suspected to have COVID-19, or has been in an environment where exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 virus is suspected. It signifies a potential exposure event without necessarily implying the individual has contracted the virus themselves.

Apply this code when a patient presents for evaluation after being exposed to COVID-19, such as a household contact of a positive case, or an individual who attended an event with known transmission. This code is appropriate for asymptomatic individuals or those presenting with symptoms that have not yet been confirmed as COVID-19.

• Do not use this code if the patient has a confirmed COVID-19 infection; instead, code the appropriate U07.1.
• This code can be sequenced as a primary or secondary diagnosis depending on the reason for the encounter.
• Consider adding codes for any signs or symptoms the patient is experiencing, if applicable, in addition to this exposure code.
