Contact with and (suspected) exposure to Zika virus

This code indicates that an individual has had contact with or is suspected of having been exposed to the Zika virus. This could be due to travel to an endemic area, sexual contact with an infected person, or other potential exposure routes, even if the patient is currently asymptomatic.

Use this code when a patient presents for evaluation following potential exposure to Zika virus, such as after returning from a Zika-affected region or reporting sexual contact with a confirmed Zika case. It is appropriate when the patient does not yet have a confirmed Zika infection but exposure is suspected.

• This code is for exposure or suspected exposure, not for confirmed Zika infection (which would use A92.5).
• Consider using this code as a secondary diagnosis when the primary reason for the encounter is related to the exposure (e.g., counseling, testing).
• Do not use if the exposure is ruled out or if the patient is confirmed negative for Zika.
