• Always sequence this code as a secondary diagnosis, following the code for the primary injury or condition that led to the foreign body retention.
• Ensure the documentation explicitly states the fragment is "nonmagnetic" to differentiate from magnetic metal fragments (Z18.11).
• Do not use this code for foreign bodies in natural orifices or lumens unless they are embedded in the tissue.
