This code describes a fracture of the main part of the left shin bone that runs straight across (transverse) and has not shifted out of alignment. Importantly, the fracture has failed to heal properly (nonunion) and the patient is presenting for follow-up care or treatment of this unhealed fracture, which is currently being managed without an open surgical incision.

Use this code when a patient with a previously diagnosed nondisplaced transverse fracture of the shaft of the left tibia returns for ongoing management of a confirmed nonunion. This applies to situations where the fracture is still being treated non-surgically, such as with casting, bracing, or observation, after the initial treatment phase.

• Ensure documentation clearly states "nonunion" and specifies the "left tibia shaft" and "transverse" fracture type.
• Verify that the encounter is for subsequent care of the nonunion, not the initial treatment or an active surgical intervention.
• Confirm the fracture is "nondisplaced" and being managed as a "closed fracture" (no open wound communicating with the fracture site).
