This code represents a bluish discoloration of the skin or mucous membranes resulting from inadequate oxygenation of the blood. It indicates a systemic issue with oxygen transport or uptake, rather than a localized circulatory problem.

Use this code when documentation explicitly states "cyanosis" as a finding, symptom, or diagnosis, without further specification of a localized type or a neonatal attack. It is appropriate when the physician identifies generalized or central cyanosis.

• Do not code this if a more specific type of cyanosis, such as acrocyanosis (I73.8), is documented.
• Avoid using this code for cyanotic attacks in newborns (P28.2); a different code applies to that specific condition.
• Always code the underlying cause of the cyanosis first, if known and documented.
