Umbilical granuloma

This code identifies a benign, moist, reddish lump of granulation tissue that forms at the base of the umbilical cord stump after it detaches. It typically appears in newborns and is a common cause of persistent umbilical discharge.

Assign this code when documentation clearly indicates the presence of an umbilical granuloma in an infant. This often presents as a small, soft, pink or red mass at the umbilicus, sometimes with serous or serosanguinous discharge.

• Differentiate from umbilical hernia or omphalitis, which have distinct clinical presentations and codes.
• Ensure the documentation specifies "granuloma" and not just general umbilical discharge or inflammation.
• Do not use for other granulomatous skin conditions; refer to the Excludes2 note.
