Menopausal and female climacteric states

This code represents the symptomatic physiological changes experienced by women during the natural transition to menopause, including perimenopause and postmenopause. These symptoms are directly related to declining ovarian function and estrogen levels, such as hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and mood disturbances.

Use this code when a female patient presents with symptoms directly attributable to the natural menopausal transition. Documentation should clearly indicate symptoms like vasomotor instability, genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), or other climacteric complaints in the absence of artificial or premature menopause.

• Do not use this code for asymptomatic menopausal status; refer to Z78.0.
• Distinguish carefully between natural menopause symptoms and those induced by surgical or chemical menopause (E89.41) or premature ovarian failure (E28.310).
• Code any specific menopausal symptoms (e.g., R23.2 for hot flashes) in addition to this code, if documented and clinically relevant.
