Galactorrhea not associated with childbirth

This code represents the spontaneous flow of milk from the breast in individuals who are not pregnant or breastfeeding. It signifies an inappropriate lactation that is not physiologically linked to parturition.

Use this code when documentation indicates galactorrhea occurring outside of the peripartum or postpartum period. This applies to both male and female patients experiencing non-puerperal milk discharge. Supporting documentation should clearly state the presence of galactorrhea and confirm the absence of current pregnancy or recent childbirth.

• Differentiate from physiological lactation during pregnancy (O92.6) or postpartum (O92.5).
• Always code any underlying cause of galactorrhea (e.g., hyperprolactinemia, pituitary adenoma) as a primary diagnosis when known.
• Do not use for breast discharge that is not milk, such as serous or bloody discharge, which would require different codes.
