Paraphimosis

This code identifies paraphimosis, a urological emergency where the retracted foreskin of an uncircumcised male cannot be returned to its normal position over the glans penis. This condition leads to constriction of the glans, potentially causing swelling, pain, and impaired blood flow. If left untreated, it can result in necrosis of the glans.

Assign this code when documentation clearly indicates a diagnosis of paraphimosis, regardless of the underlying cause. This includes cases presenting in emergency departments, outpatient clinics, or during inpatient admissions. Supporting documentation should detail the inability to reduce the foreskin and any associated symptoms or complications.

• Differentiate from phimosis (inability to retract the foreskin), which is a distinct condition.
• Code any associated complications, such as gangrene or ulceration, separately and sequence appropriately.
