Muscle spasm of calf

This code identifies an involuntary, sustained contraction of the muscles in the calf region of the lower leg. This spasm can be painful and may limit mobility. It is a symptom rather than a primary disease process.

Apply this code when documentation specifically indicates a muscle spasm localized to the calf. This is appropriate for acute episodes, chronic conditions, or when the calf spasm is a manifestation of another underlying condition. Supporting documentation should clearly state "calf muscle spasm" or similar.

• Ensure the documentation specifies the calf and not a more general lower leg or foot spasm.
• Always look for and code any underlying cause of the muscle spasm, such as electrolyte imbalance, nerve impingement, or overuse.
• Do not confuse with muscle cramps (R25.2) unless the documentation explicitly uses the term "spasm."
