Furuncle of other sites

This code represents a localized, painful, pus-filled inflammation of a hair follicle and surrounding tissue (a boil) occurring on any body site not specifically categorized elsewhere. It is caused by bacterial infection, typically Staphylococcus aureus, and presents as a tender, red nodule that eventually forms a pustule.

Use this code when documentation specifies a furuncle located on an anatomical site other than the face, neck, trunk, or buttock. Examples include a furuncle on an extremity (arm, leg, hand, foot) or the scalp. Documentation should clearly identify the lesion as a furuncle and specify its location.

• Do not use this code for carbuncles, which are deeper and involve multiple hair follicles; use codes from L02.9.
• Ensure the documentation specifies a site other than those covered by more specific furuncle codes (e.g., L02.0-L02.4).
• If the furuncle is recurrent or chronic, consider additional codes for recurrent furunculosis (L08.0).
