Appendicular concretions

This code represents the presence of hardened masses or calculi within the appendix, often referred to as fecaliths or appendicoliths. These concretions can obstruct the appendiceal lumen, leading to inflammation and appendicitis.

Use this code when documentation specifically identifies the presence of appendicular concretions, such as a fecalith or appendicolith, found during imaging studies (e.g., CT scan, ultrasound) or surgical exploration. This code is appropriate when the concretion is noted, whether or not it has led to acute appendicitis.

• Do not use this code for general appendicitis without specific mention of a concretion.
• If acute appendicitis is also present, code the appendicitis first, followed by this code for the concretion.
• Ensure the documentation clearly distinguishes between a concretion and other appendiceal findings like foreign bodies or tumors.
