Developmental odontogenic cysts

This code represents cysts that arise from the tooth-forming tissues during development, but are not neoplastic. These are typically benign, fluid-filled sacs that can occur in the jawbones and are often associated with unerupted or impacted teeth. They are distinct from inflammatory cysts that develop in response to infection.

Use this code for diagnoses of developmental odontogenic cysts such as dentigerous cysts (follicular cysts) or eruption cysts. Documentation should clearly specify the developmental origin of the cyst and its association with tooth formation. This code is appropriate when the pathologist or clinician confirms a non-neoplastic, developmental odontogenic cyst.

• Do not use this code for inflammatory odontogenic cysts; those are typically coded under K04.8.
• Carefully review pathology reports to differentiate developmental cysts from odontogenic tumors, especially keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs).
• Remember the "Excludes2" notes and ensure you are not coding a keratocyst or odontogenic keratocystic tumor, which have specific codes (D16.4, D16.5).
