Apply this code when documentation clearly indicates a chronic inflammatory process affecting both the larynx and trachea. This diagnosis is supported by physician notes detailing a prolonged course of symptoms, often exceeding several weeks or months, and ruling out acute infectious causes.

• Differentiate from acute forms; ensure the "chronic" nature is explicitly documented.
• Be mindful of the Excludes1 note for chronic tracheitis (J42) – these conditions are mutually exclusive.
• Do not use for acute laryngotracheitis (J04.2) or acute tracheitis (J04.1), as these are classified elsewhere.
