This code describes a localized, abnormal widening or ballooning of the thoracic aorta that is less than 1.5 times its normal diameter, but greater than normal. It represents a mild dilation of the thoracic aorta, distinct from a true aneurysm.

Use this code when documentation specifies "thoracic aortic ectasia" or "ectatic thoracic aorta" without meeting the criteria for an aneurysm. This diagnosis is often made incidentally during imaging studies (e.g., CT, MRI, echocardiogram) performed for other reasons.

• Distinguish from thoracic aortic aneurysm (I71.2-) which implies a dilation of 1.5 times the normal diameter or more.
• Do not code if the documentation simply states "dilated aorta" without further specification of ectasia or aneurysm.
• Always review imaging reports and physician notes to confirm the specific diagnosis and location (thoracic vs. abdominal).
