Biventricular heart failure signifies a global impairment of cardiac pump function, affecting both the left and right ventricles. This results in systemic and pulmonary congestion due to the heart's inability to effectively circulate blood. Patients typically present with symptoms of both left-sided (e.g., dyspnea, orthopnea) and right-sided (e.g., peripheral edema, jugular venous distension) heart failure.

This code is appropriate when documentation clearly indicates failure of both the left and right ventricles. This often includes findings such as reduced ejection fraction, elevated B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), and clinical signs of both pulmonary and systemic congestion. Use this code when the physician explicitly diagnoses "biventricular heart failure" or "global heart failure."
