This code identifies bruxism, or teeth grinding/clenching, that occurs exclusively during sleep. It is characterized by involuntary, repetitive jaw muscle activity during sleep, often leading to dental wear, jaw pain, and headaches upon waking.

Use this code when documentation clearly indicates bruxism is sleep-related, often diagnosed through polysomnography or patient/bed partner report of nocturnal grinding. Supporting documentation should differentiate it from bruxism occurring during wakefulness.

• Ensure documentation specifies the bruxism occurs only during sleep to differentiate from awake bruxism.
• Do not code with F45.8 (psychogenic bruxism) as per the Excludes1 note; these conditions are mutually exclusive.
• Consider additional codes for any associated dental complications (e.g., dental wear, temporomandibular joint disorders) if documented.
