Nonpyogenic meningitis

This code represents inflammation of the meninges (the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord) that is not caused by bacterial infection. It is often referred to as aseptic meningitis and can be viral, fungal, parasitic, or drug-induced. Patients typically present with headache, fever, nuchal rigidity, and photophobia.

Use this code when documentation clearly indicates meningitis that has been ruled out as bacterial through cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis or other diagnostic testing. This diagnosis is often made after negative bacterial cultures and may be further specified by the underlying etiology if known.
