Shared psychotic disorder

This code represents a rare psychotic disorder where an individual develops a delusion or delusional system similar to one already held by a person with whom they are in a close relationship. The shared delusion typically resolves when the individuals are separated. It is also known as folie à deux.

Assign this code when documentation clearly indicates a shared delusional belief system between two or more individuals, where one individual (the inducer) has a primary psychotic disorder and the other(s) (the induced) adopt the delusion. This diagnosis requires evidence that the delusion developed in the context of a close relationship and would likely not have occurred independently.

• Ensure documentation specifies the shared nature of the delusion and the close relationship between individuals.
• Do not confuse with other psychotic disorders where delusions are not shared or induced by another person.
• Code the primary psychotic disorder of the inducer separately if known and documented.
