Testicular hypofunction

This code represents a condition where the testes produce insufficient levels of androgens (primarily testosterone) or sperm, or both. It signifies a primary testicular failure not caused by a procedure. This can lead to symptoms such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, infertility, and reduced muscle mass.

Use this code when documentation indicates primary testicular insufficiency, such as in cases of Klinefelter syndrome, mumps orchitis, or cryptorchidism, where the cause is intrinsic to the testes. It is appropriate when the physician explicitly diagnoses "testicular hypofunction" or "primary hypogonadism" originating from the testes.

• Differentiate from secondary hypogonadism (E23.0), which originates from pituitary or hypothalamic dysfunction.
• Ensure documentation specifies the etiology of the testicular hypofunction if known, as additional codes may be necessary.
• Remember the Excludes1 note: never code with postprocedural testicular hypofunction (E89.5).
