Nontoxic multinodular goiter

This code describes an enlarged thyroid gland characterized by multiple nodules that are not associated with hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. The condition is typically asymptomatic unless the goiter becomes very large, causing compressive symptoms.

Use this code when documentation indicates a multinodular goiter without evidence of thyroid dysfunction (euthyroid state). This diagnosis is often made incidentally during imaging or physical examination.

• Ensure documentation explicitly states "nontoxic" or "euthyroid" to differentiate from toxic multinodular goiter.
• Do not use this code if there is any indication of hyperthyroidism (e.g., elevated T3/T4, suppressed TSH); consider codes from subcategory E05.2.
