Zika virus disease

This code identifies an active infection with the Zika virus, characterized by symptoms such as fever, rash, arthralgia, and conjunctivitis, or an asymptomatic infection confirmed by laboratory testing. It represents the acute phase of Zika virus infection acquired postnatally.

Use this code for patients presenting with signs and symptoms consistent with Zika virus infection, or for individuals with a confirmed positive laboratory test for Zika virus without congenital manifestations. Documentation should clearly indicate a diagnosis of Zika virus disease, often supported by serology or PCR testing.

• Do not use this code for congenital Zika virus infection; refer to P35.4.
• Ensure documentation specifies whether the infection is symptomatic or asymptomatic, as this code covers both.
• Consider sequencing this code as the primary diagnosis when it is the reason for the encounter.
